April 2026

Phew! The heat has arrived with a vengeance this year! With hotter temperatures and higher UV levels, we need to be extra cautious about when and where we walk our dogs.

In full sun, when the air temperature is just 77°F, asphalt can reach 125°F. That’s hot enough to cause serious burns on your dog’s paws in as little as 60 seconds. To protect your best friend’s feet, plan walks for early mornings or later in the evening when the sun is going down. Walks may also need to be shorter to avoid the intense summer heat.

A quick way to test the ground is the “7-second rule.” Place your bare foot or the back of your hand on the surface (asphalt, concrete, rocks, grass, pool decks, etc.). If you can’t comfortably hold it there for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.

Another great option for protecting your dog’s paws is using booties. While some dogs may need a little time to adjust to wearing them, they can be a fantastic way to create a barrier between sensitive paw pads and hot surfaces. Start with short, positive sessions at home so your dog can get used to the feel before heading out on a walk.

If walks need to be shortened—or skipped altogether—there are still plenty of ways to keep your dog happy and fulfilled!

Mental exercise is just as important as physical activity. Enrichment activities can range from

simple DIY projects to store-bought toys. There are endless options, and discovering what your dog enjoys is part of the fun! Be sure to check out my YouTube Channel for DIY enrichment ideas and reviews of toys my own dogs love.

Another great option is a “sniffari” at a pet-friendly store. These air-conditioned outings allow your dog to explore new sights and smells while staying cool. Some of my favorite spots in Fountain Hills are Tractor Supply and Paul’s Ace Hardware. If you’re unsure whether a store is pet-friendly, just give them a quick call.

And of course, always clean up after your pup!

Sniffspots are another fantastic option for summer fun. Many offer shaded areas, grassy play spaces, indoor options, or even pools—perfect for safe exercise in the heat.

Remember to always check the ground temperature, bring plenty of water, and watch for signs that your dog may be overheating.

Stay safe, have fun, and keep those paws protected!

The Samoyed is an ancient breed originally developed by the Samoyede people, a semi-nomadic group from Asia who migrated to Siberia around 1,000 years ago. The dogs they bred were well adapted to the harsh climate—strong enough to pull heavy sledges through deep snow, alert enough to serve as watchdogs, and skilled hunters.

Over time, they also became invaluable for guarding domesticated reindeer herds alongside their human companions. These remarkable dogs even accompanied Roald Amundsen on his historic expedition to the South Pole in 1911, helping pull his sled on the journey.

Student Spotlight

Frog the Doberman and her older doodle brother, Bandit, are an awesome pair. Both are incredibly intelligent in their own unique ways. While Bandit is gentle and thoughtful, Miss Frog approaches everything with unmatched, unbridled enthusiasm. This dynamic duo truly makes dog training a pure joy, and I greatly look forward to our classes together.
